But in Huxley’s vision, no Big Brother is required to deprive people of their autonomy, maturity and history. Orwell warns that we will be overcome by an externally imposed oppression. Contrary to common belief even among the educated, Huxley and Orwell did not prophesy the same thing. Wherever else the terror had happened, we, at least, had not been visited by Orwellian nightmares.īut we had forgotten that alongside Orwell’s dark vision, there was another-slightly older, slightly less well known, equally chilling: Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World. When the year came and the prophecy didn’t, thoughtful Americans sang softly in praise of themselves. ![]() Inside this sarcophagus of a play, beneath Sondheim's cold-steel lyrics, Burton finds a pulsing, mournful heart. It's no longer just a Guignol songfest, staring at its creatures, with fascination but not pity, from an Olympian distance above the cage in which they claw at one another. The story, of a bitter man in 19th century London who has lost his wife and child and determines to carve out his revenge, has never seemed so human or so bleak. This adaptation of the Hugh Wheeler libretto (from Christopher Bond's play) is both faithful and liberating. And they Burton, screenwriter John Logan, the whole cast and crew they've done it. It's so wacky, you almost expect them to burst out laughing but nope, they're deadly serious. An interesting premise soon turns to farce as a bunch of unwashed intellectuals make fanciful interpretations of Leonardo Da Vinci's artworks, then move beyond the borders of common sense by claiming the carved cubes in a Scottish church might actually be a code that unlocks the truth about the Christian religion. Some of Brown's book is based in fact, and it's this which documentary Cracking the Da Vinci Code sets out to explore. If you're not one of the 450 trillion* people who have read Dan Brown's The Da Vinci Code, for the purposes of this review you should know that it is an adventure/thriller in the tradition of The Celestine Prophecy that unearths a conspiracy theory surrounding the church and the falsification of history, specifically Jesus Christ's mantle as the only son of God. ![]() ![]() This is definitely a chick flick - syrupy sweet, designed to be loved by the Christian community due to the film's moral values. but that change when Landon has trouble learning his lines for the school play and he asks Jamie for help. At these functions he is forced to interact with quiet and religious, bookish Jamie Sullivan (Mandy Moore), a girl he has known for many years but to whom he has rarely ever spoken. His punishment is mandatory participation in various after-school activities, such as tutoring disadvantaged children and performing in the drama club's spring musical. Everything goes wrong the student finishes in a hospital with serious injuries, and popular but rebellious Landon Carter (Shane West) is threatened with expulsion. ![]() ![]() The story in the novel is set in the 1950s while the film is set in 1998, and it starts with a prank from a group of "cool" teenagers on a fellow high-school student, Clay Gephardt. The film stars Shane West and Mandy Moore, and was directed by Adam Shankman. This movie was recommended to me recently as a new Love Story, but after watching it I have to say that this coming-of-age teen romantic melodrama based on the 1999 romance novel of the same name by Nicholas Sparks, was a big disappointment. ![]() ![]() The publication of all the great works of Romantic literature and art. With a pointedness approaching black humour, Brown opens each chapter with a detail of the more commonly-known 'great' events that occurred around the world concurrently with that particular act of one-sided warfare. ![]() Yet, it's easy to forget how marginalised this culture remains - in social understanding, in cultural portrayals, etc. Nowadays, we're more aware of the graphic nature of the treatment of the Native Americans, and so the book's heavy-handedness is particularly evident. Using transcripts, interviews and evidence from the time, Brown creates a moving portrait that shatters many myths which still resonate, and reminds us of the sins of such ground-level intolerance.Īdmittedly, the book would've held more sway when first released, for a generation raised on WWII and '50s-era patriotism. ![]() Without resorting to extensive flashbacks or appendices, Brown manages to create a sense of the West's treatment of Native Americans from colonisation to the particularly brutal 1800s, when genocide was effectively carried out. Each chapter chronicles a particular battle, people, or plight, in rough chronological order. To get the positives out of the way first: Dee Brown's immense wealth of knowledge and research contributes to make Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee a detailed-yet-well-paced experience. ![]() Heartbreaking, mindset-shattering, eviscerating. ![]() ![]() I didn't even realized until now how SHADE was such a big manwhore. ![]() It also answered all my questions and doubts I had before.Īlso, wow. but even though I've read them all- it still quite different to read in SHADE's pov.
